Within the Trans-European Mobility Project On Education for Sustainable Development (TEMPO), supported by Erasmus Mundus Programme, Dr. Ali Khalilov has worked for 6 months on the transformation of biomass into valuable furfural derivatives through one-pot catalytic processes. Nowadays, application of principles of green chemistry involves the development and utilization of processes converting biomass into valuable chemicals and biofuel. Biomass is an integral part of the life in our planet because it builds up ecosystem. Moreover, about 200 billion tons of biomass are produced annually of which less than 5% is consumed by mankind. Therefore, the effective utilization of biomass may lay the foundation for a stepwise shift of the current global economy toward a sustainable biobased economy. At present furfuryl alcohol is obtained from xylose by a two-step process based on different catalytic reactions. There is no any application in industry on the production of furfuryl alcohol directly from xylose in a one-pot process. That is why taking account of industrial importance of this research topic according to our research plan we performed research activities in three directions:
Besides of conventional heating the reactions has been carried out also under MW irradiation. Thanks for an excellent work. All the best to our friend Ali | |
